The Fault in Our Stars

Author: John Greene
Genre: Young Adult
Release Date: 1.10.12
Rating:
*****

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,/ But in ourselves, that we are underlings."

Oh this book... I cannot even fathom how such a book is so grand and simply splendid.
Oh this book was my favorite summer accomplishment. I read and slept and read and slept; that was all i did for those 3 days. Now as i enjoy my morning coffee before my bus to school, i read some more to gather yet another dose of John's bold idea of a bunch of papers bound together with the purest intentions (i think).
You think i'm lying? Read it. The words are so natural, so real. It's like Hazel (heroin) and Augustus (hero) are standing at the door of your bedroom arguing about cancer and whatnot.

To brief you in, this book is about Hazel Grace, a 16 year old cancer patient who is forced by her parents to attend a support group, where she magically finds the love of her life... Augustus Waters. -side note: sorry for being such a female about it, but it's just so pure and, i'll stop now-
After their encounter, Augustus decides to impress Hazel and read her favorite book; An Imperial Affliction. He also becomes obsessed with it and after countless more encounters, text messages and lovey dovey moments, they both go on a trip to Amsterdam with Hazel's mother to finally meet the author of An Imperial Affliction, Van Houten, who to their ultimate surprise was a jerk. And the rest is pure misery...

Both filled with humor and tragedy, each page has something new splattered on it. I wish i had negative remarks, i really do but i don't. I enjoyed every second of this book, every page and every character.

I would definitely suggest this book to anyone who's a cancer-book-lover, a good innocent romantic, or anyone really... i don't understand how this book can be disliked, unless you're not into a prolonged conversation between two teenagers in love. Then i wouldn't really suggest it for you *point to screen*

Happy reading,

1408

1408 (2007)
Director: Mikael Hafstorm
Stars: John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson
Genre: Horror, Mystery
Rating (out of 5): ****

The Dolphin Hotel is haunted and Mike is going to get to the bottom of this mystery. Ironically, an author of the not very popular ghost stories, does not believe in the existence of the paranormal. Though the manager desperately tries to convince Mike that going inside that hotel room means never coming out, Mike happily takes on the challenge as he is blindly convinced that these stories the manager has told are just... well, stories.
He is sadly, to our entertainment, proven wrong.

This, originally a short story by Stephen King, was probably the only scary movie i've watched lately with a good and well built plot that caries on throughout the whole movie.
The directors work is spectacular and the events are anything but boring. I found myself leaning in eagerly, although i advice you not to. The actor's work is profound, the movie carries on very well, as you see that he gets genuinely freaked out by the ongoing ghost interactions.

The scenes are not scary, per say. I found them spooky rather than the actual scare that carries with you though-out the rest of the day. I watched the movie and went to pee, without problems. (too much information?) Honestly, i rate the fright i get from the movie by how hesitant and chilly i get when i need to... 'go'. I did jump a few times, but it was very rare.
Supernatural fans (hey buddies!) won't get startled as much.

Overall, the movie was leaning on a sad story line rather one that will you keep up at night; unless you're crying your eyes out, which i highly doubt will happen. It is worth the watch definitely but i'd watch it with a friend, just in case.

Post warning: If you're looking forward to a lot of gore, don't be too thrilled. I'm actually happy i watched a 'scary' movie without gore, blood or intense sexual scenes that really are out of place and unnecessary. It's rated PG13 after all...

Enjoy!

Warm Bodies

Warm Bodies
Director: Jonathan Levine
Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer
Genre: Comedy, Romance, Horror
Rating: ****

Zombie boy, "R" doesn't remember how he died or where he was from, let alone his own name. He cannot bleed, dream, eat anything other than humans and he certainly cannot feel. Julie's father is in charge of blowing zombies like "R" to bits, so what happens when the twist of Romeo and Juliet's, R and Julie fall in love; rebelling against all odds?
Outstanding, and extremely entertaining. Although i am not a zombie/vampire kind of girl, i completely enjoyed this movie and loved the plot. "Having the best conversation in the world without saying anything" totally applies to some scenes in the movie. The director did a great job, making the story clear and fun, once again introducing us to a new kind of species; zombies. The whole idea of love being the cure should have seemed cliche, but it didn't. The roles given to the stars were accurate, needless to say, this movie was a success.

When zombie boy (Nicholas) tries to connect with a human, he finds himself experiencing a new emotion; which we can all safely say, was love. The ending was predictable, as any other love story would be, but the movie was worth the watch. Cheesy, quirky, pleasant and horror themed at the same time, this movie was a combination of so many genres but kept me captivated the whole time. The cute love between Julie and zombie boy was so comfortable, they instantly clicked as an icon in my head.
The Bonies did give me a little jump at times as the camera work as fantastic; the scare was nice. Many points in the movie gave me goosebumps, as i am an utter sucker for "working together" to stop the bad guy(s). Bravo, the visual effects was a great success, the zombies looked so unpleasant, which is exactly the target here. Couldn't have scripted it better myself.

Was the movie SO great that you couldn't find one fault?

To answer that, no. It did disappoint me at one point because the character Julie (Teresa) very much reminded me of Twilight's Bella Swan and her selfishness towards her father's orders. Although, apart from a quality trait, zombie boy did seem dull and dead like Edward. If i'm being honest, to a certain point i felt 'maybe they're making fun of Twilight' but i cannot confirm that at all. I'm still not a zombie fan, can't stand them actually, but this movie was great and i fell for every cliche they were selling.

Yes, you can see which side i'm on. You should certainly go watch the movie, or rent it right about now. It'll give you a good laugh, i'm sure. Good old classic love story about zombies and humans. We humans can make a love story out of anything, can't we? It's really fascinating...
Leave a comment if you've watched the movie, tell me what you think!

Man Of Steel

Man Of Steel (2013)
Director: Zack Snyder
Actors: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams
Genre: Action, Fantasy, Adventure
Rating: (out of 5) ***

Being a huge superhero and comics fan, i was long awaiting this movie since the minute it came out. *I did my waiting, 12 years of it!* Please ignore the Harry Potter reference, but it really did feel like forever waiting for Man Of Steel to be released. The acting was good and the director's vision was clear, but i rest my case when i say, there was nothing super about the movie.By abolishing the word Super in the S on Clark's chest, the director Nolan changes this symbol to "hope". The myth revolves around a boy, an alien reject, who has super powers brought down from his parents in Krypton; who we know had to give up Clark for a greater plan. Thus, gaining them some enemies, Kal's (Clark's) parents must insure his safety by sending him to earth. A bigger problem arises when the movie's villain, Zod, stops at nothing to defeat Clark.

Problem 1. Why did he shave?

Grudging on past sacrifices, Clark relives his childhood in painful memories, showing the audience how strict his human father was about his 'powers'. The bitter relationship between Clark and his powers grew harsh as he realizes he cannot save everyone. Though the sense of heroism in Clark was a bit off when it came to saving the people of the world. Also, the igniting spark that should have set off between Clark and Lois (Amy) was badly lit, as i felt no chemistry at any point. The plot was butchered as there was a highly exposed back story due to the irritating -nonstop flashbacks that gave away any mystery that this story line held.
Problem 2. Be a hero.

Despite all this, I was captivated by every fight scene and intense moment in the film. I found it immensely hard to blink at times or grab a drink as i feared i would miss out on a punch or a blast of radioactive missiles. The space ship Jor-el (Russell Crowe), Clark's real father, was in appeared jaw dropping; the idea of his conscientiousness remaining there to guide his son was so creative, that alone gave this movie a -*-
Another awesome feature is the planet Krypton itself and the explosion of that planet. Especially in 3D, i felt i was a passenger on NASA's shafts. Bravo to superb visual effects.

We're talking about Superman, the ongoing classic. Yes, you should go watch it, the fight scenes alone will make it up. No, you shouldn't expect a good romance or heroic ending, you are left with nothing but an S that should stand for hope and not Superman; my whole life has been a lie.

The Invention Of Lying

The Invention Of Lying (2009)
Director: Ricky Gervais, Matthew Robinson
Actors: Ricky Gervais, Jennifer Garner
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance
Rating: (out of 5) ***
If you could lie about anything, anything, what would about?

The story is about a man in a world that cannot tell a lie. He, under life's pressure, is forced to tell the world's very first lie. We understand from the actor's outstanding performance that it is impossible for anyone to tell a lie, apart from him. Gervais, who is the director and the main actor did a great job. The movie is fun and entertaining, especially for younger children. However, the movie does have some light adulterated comedy, in a few scenes. I, being a fan of Jennifer, found her acting fantastic. A great comedy to watch with the family on a day off.

Now, since this movie is very original, i found that at first it was hard to tell if it was going to end. However, an hour past the movie, the ending became very predictable; especially the childish love between the two main characters. This did not affect, in any way, how fond i am of the whole story and it's character development; this is revolved mainly around Anna (Jennifer Garner) as she begins to realize the true meaning of love and understanding between two people who are meant to be.

For children, the story does focus on the importance of love and the deniability of lying to your loved ones. There is a huge amount of comedy, it does make you chuckle at times. A classic, Gervais managed to portray a great visual representation of the power of lies and liars; showing how they get an advantage over everyone.

Giving this movie 3/5 stars for it's unsurpassed creativity and imagination. Would definitely watch it again with friends, it'll give us a good laugh.

500 Days Of Summer.

500 Days of Summer
Director: Marc Webb
Actors: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zooey Deschanel
Genre: Drama, light-comedy
Rating: (out of 5) ***

There are two types of people in the world; men and woman.

Right from the beginning of the movie, you could tell it was going to turn out unique. The director (Marc) has a fantastic style of keeping the story intriguing, the time lapses keep the movie fresh and give us an undeniable feel of "wanting to know what happened". As usual, i loved Joseph's acting, of course the same with Zooey. A great movie, you wouldn't want to miss a romance without a love story.

It's a story about a man who finds love, but the woman he fell in love with has a reverse thought on love and miracles. The plot is revolved around the main actors, and the character development is focused on Tom, when he comes to a conclusion about his theories about love. Through the movie, the scenes become cheesy, but it felt good to watch. Not like your basic love story, for once there is a huge and perky twist in the end.

The movie has a message behind it. The director and the story-writers do a good job at trying to show the views that it is important to do what you want and not what you're forced to do by life. It also emphasizes greatly on the message, "Love is coincidence"

Watch it if you're in the mood for a good, solid drama between two people. Light humor, work crushes and the ongoing need to figure out love. Wouldn't watch it again, it's a one time thing that will stay with you forever.
